It is located on the eastern edge of the city of OC and borders Interstate 5 to the north and east, Menlo Park to the south and west, and Cucamonga to the northwest. Citrus Heights is one of three communities in OC that have a significant heavy industry presence: it is home to Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works facility (the world's largest commercial nuclear weapons research center), Western Electric's Bell Labs campus, and Chrysler Corporation's Pascagoula plant. The other two are Irvine and Westminster. The first people in citrus Grove were Native American traders who grew Mission oranges for export from 1769 until 1821 when party led by Jose Rodriguez de la Torre discovered orange trees; he named it "Ornanguera" after his hometown of Ornacota on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. In 1824 Oranges were brought overland from Mexico as part of an effort by United States Minister John Foust to purchase land grants for settlers in what would become Orange County; this was also when Diego Rivera started painting Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office vehicles with orange paint. In 1866 citrus groves began being irrigated with canals built under George Jeffery Crocker’s direction as part of efforts to improve agriculture through irrigation; these days Citrus Heights has some of Southern California’s most productive orchards.
