Claremont, California is a small town located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. It has a rich military history dating back to when it was part of the Mexican-American War. In 1848, American General Mariano Cámpora made an amphibious landing on Claremont’s beach and began battle against Mexican forces. The Battle of Rio Bravo resulted in the death of more than fifty American soldiers and two Mexicans. This event helped convince United States President James K. Polk to declare war on Mexico and become involved in the conflict. After eighteen months of fighting, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna emerged victorious and Claremont became part of Mexico proper. In 1849, Claremont joined the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. Since then, Claremont has been an important base for U.S military operations in Southern California. Military personnel have frequently resided here during World War II (1939-1945) and Operation Desert Storm (1991). The town also played host to numerous Counterculture events during this time period such as Woodstock Festival and Free Speech Movement Parade . Despite its recent military history, Claremont still remains a vibrant community that attracts visitors from all over Southern California for its cultural attractions and friendly residents

Claremont was founded in 1887 by George C. Cline and his wife, Mary. Claremont became a lumber-raiding town after the discovery of large quantities of coal and timber near the confluence of the Kings River and Clearwater Rivers. The town grew quickly due to its location, with many natural resources available for mining and logging. By 1912, Claremont had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1932, Claremont voters passed a resolution calling for an end to segregation in public schools in California. This began the Claremont School District's history as one of open integration in California. In 1988, Claremont received city status from the City Council. Today, Claremont remains one of Californias most ethnically diverse cities with over 50% Asian American residents and nearly two-thirds of its citizens being Hispanic or Latino origin.
Claremont was founded in 1853 by Captain George W. Gilmore and his family. The town was named after Claremont, a small village in England. Captain Gilmore came to California in 1849 and started the first post office in Claremont. In 1860, he organized the Claremont Volunteer Fire Department. The first store was built in 1865 on the corner of Bishop and Center streets. Two years later,Captain Gilmore donated land for a public school. In 1867, Captain Gilmore married Anna Sisson and moved to Claremont with her. They had two children: John W., who became an editor at The Weekly Advertiser, and Barbara C., who married Edward Aiken Jnr., one of the founders of Southern California University (SUSC). In 1870, Capt Gilmore died at home from a heart attack caused by overwork; Anna continued to live at home until her death in 1896. After Capt Gilmore's death, Anna took care of their children while they finished high school. In 1898, Anna's son John W.'s wife ran into money problems and sold their house so that they could move back to Claremont permanently with their two young daughters Alice and Edith Gertrude Aiken Jnr.). On November 15th 1909 Annie's daughter Alice married Harold Hutton Upson (1887-1961) who had been living near Clarentham since 1907 when he met her there working as a clerk at the Clarentham Store owned by his father-in-law James Upson Sr.. Together they had three daughters: Patricia Hutton Upson (born October 25th 1942), Kerry Hutton Upson (born September 8th 1944), Anne Hutton Upson(born May 6th 1946).
