Claremont, California is the hometown of famed coffee roaster and small-batch mill owner, José Andrés. The city was founded in 1856 by postmaster General Amos Kendall and his wife, María Concepcion de la Orden (née Pacheco). The first shop in town was a grocery store that served as the home of local rancher José Cárdenas. In 1887, American Express opened a branch office in Claremont. In 1916, Ralston Purina began production at their Claremont plant. At this point, the company owned and operated over 170 plants worldwide. Ralston Purina's Claremont plant produced more than 1 million cups of coffee each year from 1916 to 1966. In 1967, Roestoff Brothers Coffee purchased Ralston Purina's assets for $5 million. In 1969, Bob Dylan became an employee of Jughead Coffee Company after auditioning for the position while on tour with The Band in Illinois. From 1969 until his death in 1995, Dylan drank Jughead coffee while touring with The Band and recorded several albums at Jughead's facilities. In 1990, Jughead Coffee Co.'s equipment was donated to Claremont University for use in their School of Business Administration program; it still remains on campus today. In 2003, Starbucks announced they would open up a new location within walking distance of Jughead Coffee Company - now known as Bob's Coffee - which continued to be used as a filming location for various projects throughout its history including "The Craft" and "Parenthood." In 2009-10 Starbuck closed their original location at 5551 State St., which sat next to what is now Bob's Coffee - marking the first time a Starbucks had ever closed within downtown Claremont since it opened three decades earlier!

Claremont is first mentioned in historical records in 1858 as "Cortland". The name comes from two Peaks in the mountain range – Mount Claremore and Mount Carmel. The village was started by Horace Greeley, who founded The Claremont Mining Company there in 1885. In 1890, it became an incorporated town with a population of 1,000 people. During World War II, Claremont served as headquarters for United States Air Forces Southern California (USAAF USCAC). The American Theatre Company played its first matinee performance at USPAC's Hollywood Bowl here on November 17, 1944. In recent years, Claremont has been home to several universities: Pomona College (1921), Claremont Graduate School (1981), and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2003). It is located on the Claremont Hills plateau, east of Berkeley and west of San Francisco. The name "Claremont" was derived from an early grant by Governor George Legate to Antonio Vallejo in 1795. The first post office in Claremont opened in 1869. In 1907, the town incorporated as a city. Claremont's population grew rapidly during World War II due to the munitions production at nearby Kaiser Aluminum Company; its economic prosperity declined after the war ended. The city experienced another growth spurt during the late 1990s and 2000s as developers built luxury homes and businesses near downtown Claremont; however, this has also led to some tension between residents and developers over increased traffic and noise issues.
