Claremont, California is a small city in the eastern Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 10,895 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Claremont Hills and lies within Palm Springs County. The first European to visit what is now Claremont was Jedediah Smith in 1807 when he and his party explored the region for cattle drives southward from Los Angeles. In 1820, Mexican land grants were made to Captain John Hagedorn, who named it Rancho Palos Verdes after his father-in-law's estate in England. A post office called Claremont was established in 1847, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1861, General Pershing ordered Major General James Longstreet to march on Claremont with 1,500 troops to besiege the town during the Emancipation Proclamation; however,Longstreet did not enter Claremont until 1863 because he had been advised by then Governor Pico that doing so would anger Native American leaders who had already surrendered most of their lands to Mexico City. During World War II much of Claremont was used as an airfield by United StatesAAF bomber groups based at nearby Lancaster Air Force Base. Many structures still remain from those days including Hangar One (now part of Gould Park), which served as a bomber station headquarters during World War II; runway 36L/24R (now known as Airport Boulevard) serving as a general aviation airport during WWII; and Plantation House which housed both military personnel and civilian workers while construction took place near Highway 95A between 1945-1946 converting it into a military airfield housing many Convair B-29s; all are now closed down and awaiting redevelopment or demolition. On July 14th 1951 two planes flew low over downtown palm springs following takeoff from local airport but never landed.; they were identified as Korean Air Lines "KAL 901" piloted by Captains Kim Byung Seok & Jong Sik Kang making their second ever scheduled flight outside Korea
