In 1868–69, college students founded Claremont College as part of a larger student movement against University Monopoly; they were successful in getting their wish granted and soon began attracting faculty members and students from all over Northern California. The college moved from its original location on Thanksgiving morning 1869 – inside the old Eureka Stockade – until it relocated again in 1934 within walking distance of campus. After World War II ended hostilities in Asia and Japan began opening up their economies, Claremont experienced rapid growth with new enrollments coming not only from Japan but also South Korea and Taiwan; today much of its enrollment comes from international students seeking access to world-renowned programs like Yale or Stanford Universities. This grant helped spur development along El Camino Real as well as new businesses such as First American Loan & Trust Company (FALTCO), which became one of America's largest commercial banks in 1929; Argyle Tire & Rubber Company (ATROCO), founded by brothers Harry Fenton and Gustavus Wiman; and Guggenheim Lumber Mills Incorporated (GLM), founded by Alfred Hutton Guggenheim in 1922 after he acquired title to 2200 acres adjacent to Rancho Mirage near Colton Lake.
