Claremont is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 23,643 at the 2010 census. Claremont is located on the historic Rancho La Brea Adobe property east of downtown and north of Palm Springs. It was founded by Captain John Sutter in 1864 as part of his military occupation of what is now Kern County. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1886, the San Bernardino and Claremont Railway reached Claremont from San Bernardino through Palm Springs and then up to Clovis Junction near Redlands; this line became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad system after its acquisition by SP in 1948. The city's name may derive from an early Spanish mission called "La Encantada" (The Enchantress), which had been built there in 1827 for Governor José Joaquin Murillo y Salinas. In 1915, Claremont community leaders formed a committee to develop plans for a new City Hall building that would become known as the civic center of Claremont; construction began that year and finished in 1917. When it reopened following renovations, the city hall became home to the Claremont Post Office until it closed on July 1, 1976 due to budget cuts brought about by Mayor Jerry Brown's administration. After years of planning and fundraising efforts led by community activists, redevelopment began around town including the opening of several smaller stores within walking distance at various locations over time culminating with one large store located just east of downtown which opened in late 2016 as One Claremont Place Mall Claremont has experienced a rise and fall since its heyday during World War II when many young men enlisted or left for war effort; however, recent economic development has created new opportunities for locals while also resurrecting some old businessesrates have increased significantly making it one of Northern California's most economically vibrant cities Aspect ratio: 3/4
