The Clayton Army Air Field was a World War II military airfield in the eastern Sacramento County town of Clayton, California. It was located on the east side of Dixon Road, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of the center of Clayton. TheAAF served as a training and flying base for American fighter pilots during World War II. Clayton Air Force Base opened at the site on April 12, 1942. The first units to arrive were the 92d Fighter Group, which arrived from Spangdahlem AFB Germany on July 1, 1942. The wing had been formed as part of General George C. Marshall's plan to arm America's "Big Three" enemies—the Soviet Union, China and Japan—with equal numbers of fighters and bombers. By September 15th all available squadrons were at Benson AFB near San Francisco; however, no combat mission could be flown until October 7th when P-47s led by Lt Col John Sitton downed an enemy bomber over San Francisco Bay Area). In early 1943 they began operations against Japanese shipping offshore in support of Operation Hiryu which aimed to open up East Asia to American mining operations while also disrupting Japanese supply lines vital to their war effort. A total of 33 missions were flown with P-38s alone achieving destruction or damage beyond what any other type of airplane had achieved before or during World War II. In addition to this escort work they flew bombing runs against Tokyo targets such as Kanto Shimbun Radio Tower without loss even though enemy anti-aircraft fire was heavy throughout most of those flights... On November 16th 1943 squadron personnel went into action for the first time when two pilots from 94th FS strafed a transport off Chula Vista beach killing six Marines and wounding 18 others... Squadron members have played an important role in many major campaigns during WWII including: Midway; Okinawa; Saipan; Iwo Jima; etc...

After John's death, his wife, Nellie, took over the business until her own death in 1984. Today, the Clayton businesses are run by their children, Ross and Cathy Shafer.
