Clayton, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California, in the central mountain range. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sierra Nevada foothills region. The first white people to come to Clayton were pioneers who explored and surveyed the area in 1847. They named their new settlement after Major General James Fenton Clayton (1798-1874), an officer in the Mexican-American War and U.S. Army general who served as Commanding Officer of Fort Tejon in San Luis Obispo County from 1846 to 1849. The town was platted on November 15, 1850 by John Sutter and Adolphus Beal as part of Rancho San Felipe del Norte which straddled present-day Kern and Inyo Counties east of Interstate 10. A post office called Clayton was established at this time, but no residents lived there until 1861 when Hosea Prentice built a cabin near the center of town with help from his brother Amos Prentice Sr.. In 1865, major General Grantselected Clayton for military installation because it had been selected as one of his proposed "Points Of Departure" for troops heading into California during the American Civil War due to its strategic location within easy reach of points along the eastern border with Mexico that could be used as supply stations or staging areas for forces entering Texas through Sonoma Valley National Park (). The site became known as Fort Rosecrans () after Major General Theodore Roosevelt (), CommanderinChiefof all Union Armies west of Mexico City (). Clayton experienced rapid growth during World War II when industries such as munitions production moved into the area because they needed not only agricultural land but also access to water resources essential for war purposes. Additionally, many soldiers returning home built homes here postwar while others continued working at local businesses until retirement or relocation back eastward following World War II ended hostilities in 1945. After years of steady growth spurt between 1950 and 1960 Claytonsite regained some level stability thanks primarily to innovation brought about by two generations of families: The Prentice family ran Clover Insurance Agency until it merged with Allstate Corporation in 1978;and then added retail space inside State Capitol Building starting under current management beginning in 1984.]
