Clayton is a small town in the Kern County region of Southern California. It is located about 20 miles east of Bakersfield, 30 miles north of Los Angeles, and 50 miles south of San Bernardino. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. Coffee first began to be grown in Clayton in 1898 when George A. Woodruff started planting coffee beans on his property near the current day intersection of Interstate 5 and Bear Valley Road. In 1916, Clayton's first grocery store opened and served coffee along with other groceries. The choice to have coffee as a primary grocer product contributed to early success for this small community. In 1984, the Clayton Coffee Company was founded by David Fenton and John Smedley to market and distribute high quality espresso-based coffees from their farmstead near Hillcrest Drive and I-5 Exit 134A in Clayton. Today, Clayton Coffee continues to produce world-class espresso beans under its own name as well as sell products such as brewed coffee cups, ground coffee (of all colors), pastries, candy bars, health supplements, beer pours (and more!), wine bottles/flutes/trucks/cups - you name it! The history of espresso-based coffee goes back several years further than that of high quality local baking products like chocolate cake or brownies - it all starts with George A Woodruff's beloved beans!

A small community near where Clayton now stands was founded by Mormons in 1876 and became known as "Mormon Village". The name "Clayton" has been applied to other settlements in Kern County since that time: first were what are now Midland City and Northridge; then Lodi; later Redlands and Needles
