The Clayton Museum of Art was founded in 1906 by Mrs. H.L. Hood and Dr. Charles Seligman with the goal of creating "a depot for the education of American art." The museum became a private institution in 1916 and moved to its current location on Bancroft Avenue in Clayton in 1951. In 1976, the museum purchased a piece by Edward Munch from the demolished Norton Estate in London (now Tate Modern), which served as its inaugural gift from the United States government. In 1984, First Lady Barbara Bush made a donation to the museum that included an outdoor sculpture, "The Scream", created by artist Loren Rockwell. In 1999, the museum acquired "The Scream" from the University of Texas at Austin after it was donated to them by then-Governor George W. Bush Jr.. Since then, both pieces have been on display atrium level in front of the main building overlooking Bancroft Avenue until they were moved again to their current locations in 2006 when new galleries were built on top of old storage buildings on McCormick Place Drive near downtown Clayton. After being closed for several years due to funding cuts, The Clayton Museum reopened under new leadership in 2018 with a focus on interactive exhibits and programming that encourages community engagement through hands-on experiences and art tours throughout the year.

It is located on the Nevada-California border about 20 miles east of Bakersfield and 40 miles west of Los Angeles. The first decade of the 19th century saw an increase in miners coming to Kern County from all over America looking for gold and silver properties that lay within its boundaries. By 1879, there were more than 50 businesses operating in Clayton with a population of around 100 people. The name Clayton originated with one of these early businesses; J D Clayton & Co., Auctioneers and Mercers store which had been opened on July 4th, 1878 by John Dalton Clayton as a mercantile enterprise. Clayton experienced some growth during the last two decades of the 19th century thanks to increasing trade with East India Company partners and other American capitalists who became interested in trading in Kern County minerals including coal and iron ore. In 1895, local newspapers reported that cattle farmers were becoming increasingly successful due to new irrigation techniques being developed near present day Diridon Ranch south of town (now part of Bakersfield). This area would become known as “the Birthplace Of Western Agriculture” due to its success in producing high value crops such as corn, cotton, potatoes and watermelons for export throughout much of the later 20th century until they were replaced by fruits and vegetables production today. During World War II many citizens banded together to help feed their war-ravaged country while also manufacturing munitions for the Allies effort; this led to increased business for Claytons Businessmen during this time period as well as increased development opportunities for the community during postwar years when resources became available again following World War II’s end. With renewed economic opportunity came new construction projects such as a school annex built in 1951 followed soon thereafter by a fire station built in 1955 which remains operational today named after Mrs Lillian Pyle who donated her land surrounding it alongwith funds towards its construction
