The Clayton Naval Air Station located in the city of Fresno, California was a major naval air station during World War II. The Station played an important role in the Battle of Midway and other engagements. The Station also served as a training ground for pilots and aircrew from American warships and submarines. Clayton NAS was closed in 1958 and is now known as the Navy's Alameda NAS. Clayton, California was founded in 1853 by George Clayton and is the most populous city in the Sacramento Valley. The city is located in the eastern part of the state on the banks of the Sacramento River. It has a population of over 150,000 people and is home to nearly half of California’s General Services Administration (GSA) workforce. The city also boasts one of America’s largest collection of historic buildings including two presidential libraries, two major shopping malls, four professional sports teams and three universities. Clayton was first known as an agricultural center due to its many small fruit orchards and cattle ranches that were used for export to Europe. However, with growing industry came increased competition for jobs and growth stagnated until World War II when it exploded into activity as a manufacturing center thanks to wartime production requirements such as aircraft parts and automobiles.
