Clayton was founded in 1887 by Captain John W. Clayton and his brother, Commodore Alfred A. Clayton as an agricultural community on the site of what is now the Naval Air Station Miramar. In 1922, Captain Clayton donated a three-acre lot to the city of Clovis for use as a naval air station. The air station became known as Naval Air Station Miramar and Today’s Naval Air Station Miramar is one of the most important military installations in the United States Navy. In 1904, General Wesley Smith had his headquarters here during World War I when he commanded Army Corps Area C which included Kern County. After World War I, General Smith moved his headquarters to Bakersfield and then to San Bernardino where he died in 1925.
