The base was initially a small airfield used by the Army Ground Forces to supply bombers and fighter planes for World War II. By 1945, Clearlake had become an important Cold War stronghold and was home to one of the United States' first nuclear weapons test sites. In 1953, Air Force Base Clearlake was transferred from the Army to the Air Force and became part of Ninth Air Force. In 1957, Ninth Air Force moved its headquarters from Clearlake to Goodyear AFB in Arizona Territory. This move allowed for more efficient use of airspace at Goodyear AFB, which led to increased military activity at Clearlake as well as new technologies being developed here. In 1969, Ninth Air Force was disbanded and its assets were divided among numerous other USAF commands. However, elements of Ninth AirForce still operate today as part of various numbered air forces around the world. In 1997, when it merged with Second Tactical Fighter Wing (9th TFW) at Elmendorf AFB outside Anchorage Alaska - becoming Third Combat Wing - Eighth Tactical Fighter Wing (8th TFW) also merged into Third Combat Wing which again became Ninth Wing after 9/11 reorganization on active duty USAF bases worldwide). Clearlake, California (formerly Clearlake Valley) is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 48,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is adjacent to Menlo Park and Palo Alto. Clearlake Village is an urban renewal area that has been developed since the early 1970s near Interstate 80 between Menlo Park and Palo Alto. The first Europeans to visit Clearlake were Spanish missionaries in 1769, who built a mission here on Rancho Tamalpais. In 1821, John Francis eggleston donated land to the state of California for a public square in Clearlake Village; this square became known as Californias Square after him. The village's ZIP code was 84301 at its incorporation. The town dates back to 1873 when farmers subdivided land which they cultivated along Deer Path Road east of I-80 and platted it into small towns: Cloverdale, Crystal City (now part of Fremont), Elmira Heights (now part of Union City), El Sobrante (now part of Hayward), Fruitvale (now in Walnut Creek), Kensington Gardens (now part of Oakland), Milpitas (now in Fremont) and Pleasanton. In 1907, two brothers named Clarence Day Jr., Charles Wickersham Day and Alfred Hübner bought 5 acres north of Cloverdale for $10 per acre from George Hearn who had owned it since 1868. They began clearing trees and building homes there on their 160-acre site that would eventually become Clearlake Village or Caledonia Heights today. By 1915 clear Lake effect snowflakes had started falling from the sky like rain clouds over Denver Colorado so Clarence called his brother Charles with some new technology he had invented called an "ultralight blower" that could turn snow into liquid fertilizers which would be used on fruit farms all around America.... This technology would later be patented by Clarence Day Sr.. In 1916 Clearlake renamed themselves Clarence Day Valley after their father's gift to them...
