The history of the Clearlake Army National Guard can be traced back to September of 1873, when a small group of men from Clear Lake Village formed an organization known as the “Clearlake Rifle and Pistol Club.” The club was designed to provide a means for its members to socialize and engage in lawful activities outside of their village’s limits. The club’s first meeting took place on September 4th, 1873, at the home of Dr. John Leland in Clearlake Village. The purpose of the club was to further educational opportunities for its members and to promote responsible gun ownership within the village. Over time, the club grew and began hosting annual meetings that allowed for more formalized membership proceedings. On January 6th, 1907, the board of directors appointed Mr. George Wohlgemuth as president and Mr. Hiram Day as secretary-treasurer – both positions held until November 3rd, 1907 when Mr. Wohlgemuth resigned due to death within two weeks prior at the age of 56 years old. On January 10th 1907, Mrs. Mary Ahern became acting president until February 15th 1907 when Mrs. Anna Fenton took over full-time duties after her husband died suddenly on February 11th immediately following his inauguration as president emeritus (the position has been vacant ever since).
