Clearlake is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,241 at the 2010 census. Clearlake is a small town located on the east side of San Bernardino and its sister city, Riverside. The first clear water visible from what is now Clearlake was seen by Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1775 when he landed on Rancho El Cajon shoreline after sailing around Cape Horn. In 1887, entrepreneur James M. White purchased land in Clearlake and developed it into an agricultural center with markets for produce and livestock. In 1902, A.C. Smith opened the world's first air-conditioned grocery store in Clearlake; this store continued to be open until 1984 when it closed because of recessionary conditions in the area. In 1907, local electrician John Latham established a power plant northeast of town which produced electricity for local residents until 1975 when that plant was retired due to environmental concerns about coal mine dust settling in the community and affecting health and property values. In 1912 the founders of Kaiser Aluminum Company built a new aluminum smelting plant north of town which has continued to operate as Kaiser Aluminum Mines since 1951; however most operations have been shifted to other facilities nearby due to pollution problems from mining operations over time

Clearlake is an agricultural community located on the edge of the San Joaquin Valley and surrounded by Fresno and Bakersfield counties. It has a mission school, Lutheran church, Baptist church, and post office. The first people to live in Clearlake were Native Americans who hunted game on the Active Creek Indian Reservation in present-day Fresno County. In 1851 John Capps built a cabin on Clear Lake for himself and his family. A year later he married Anna Henshaw from Angelina County, California. They had two children: John Capps (1853-1946) who became an American business executive and served as mayor of Fresno; and Anna (1855-1937) who ran unsuccessfully for Congress three times from California's Central Valley region between 1911 and 1916 before becoming headmistress of Northridge High School in Pasadena after World War I. In 1875 Charles Goodyear founded what would become Clearlake's first munitions factory when he bought land near current day Red Bluff Road and Middle Fork Creek in what is now Bakersfield County. Goodyear manufactured ammunition for both the Ulysses S Grant Expedition during the Mexican–American War (1865-66) and World War II using local water sources to avoid using arms races with Russia or Japan . He also developed a farm which produced fruit trees for distribution throughout Southern California . After Goodyear's death in 1918 his heirs sold most of his property to Harry Fenton Morse , president of US Steel Corporation . Morse began developing land east of town into what is now Clearlake Township ; this eventually led to clearwater beach development west of town across Middle Fork Creek Morse named his new township after him – Clearlake Township, Incorporated 1922). The company relocated its headquarters from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to El Sobrante, California in 1923; it remained there until 1961 when it moved back to Pittsburg under corporate name American Steel Products Company . In 1951 American Steel Products merged with United Metalworkers Local No. 914 (UMWL 914), forming Nationalsteel Industries ; this company was renamed ArcelorMittal International Limited following ArcelorMittal’s acquisition of Mittal Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., British steel producer In 1958 US Steel Corporation merged with Alcoa Aluminum Holdings Inc.; Alcoa then changed its name to ArcelorMittal International Limited Following ArcelorMittal’s acquisition of UK steel producer Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Plant from Toshiba Corp., all remaining mines at Unocal were closed down except those at Murrieta Canyon producing uranium ore After declining sales due to low prices for aluminum pieces that did not meet fire safety requirements caused by deregulation , Alcoa filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2006 In response management announced plans including closure or reduction of production at all plants open more than 5 years while selling off assets including some unprofitable ones such as Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Plant operations being sold off as part of a Joint Venture Agreement with French energy firm EDF Energy plc which will manage that plant until 2030 In spite these news layoffs still took place despite protests outside main plant gates
