Clearlake is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 44,871 at the 2010 census. Clearlake is adjacent to Richmond and El Sobrante Counties on the eastern shore of San Pablo Bay and on the western shore of Peninsula Bay. It lies about 21 miles (33 km) north-northwest of downtown Oakland, 12 miles (19 km) east-southeast of Concord and 9 miles (14 km) south-southwest of Berkeley. The first Europeans to visit Clearlake were Father Junípero Serra and his party in 1807 while exploring Alta California before their journey up the coast to Monterey Bay. In 1838, John Sutter founded Rancho Gorda in present day Clearlake; it became part ofUSD 523 in 1850. A sawmill built there by Sutter remains one of the most significant relics from his time in Northern California. In 1870, when Stanford University was founded nearby, part of its land was donated by Reverend Jesse Hinton for agricultural research purposes; today's Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory is located on that land. In 1905, after years during which clear Lake had been cut off from local water supplies by hills surrounding it due to strict US Army regulations then being put into effect as part of World War I efforts to prevent enemy use or infiltration across US borders (), local citizens raised money through a drive called "Paddle lake" to build a new dam on clear Lake so that more water could be brought into town for irrigation purposes (). It closed in 1945 but reopened briefly in 1949 to allow new businesses to open while still being used as an internment camp until it finally closed again in 1952. Today, part of Clearlake is located within the City of Fresno limits while other portions are included within Pomona County
