Clearlake is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and is bordered by Imperial Valley to the east and north, Gaviota Peninsula to the west and south, and Qualcomm Stadium to the northwest. The first Europeans who came to what is now Clearlake were Missionaries José Soto and Francisco de Haro in 1821. The area that now Clearlake was part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Baja- Territorial Grant No. 5 (now City of San Diego), which was granted by Governor Manuel Nieto on April 15, 1823. In 1836, John Wesley Powell discovered oil near present-day Clearlake while exploring for oil wells in Rancho Buena Park. In 1843, Mexican soldiers burned down an American settlement at Point Loma after capturing it during an invasion of California by General Antonio Mesa y Costilla. However this event did not cause any significant damage or loss of life asAmerican settlers quickly rebuilt their presence in Point Loma wine country throughout most of 1844-1845 due largely to supplies brought overland from Zacatecas via Mexico City undercutting the already low quality transportation available overland then only possible by sea traveling across Baja California until 1850 when Commodore Perry'satz Expedition opened up coastal Arizona Passage making crossing through that territory possible with safe passage across Lake Otay possible; thus ending any possibility of Mexican intervention against English settlements within present day Orange County.. American farmers living along Central Coast began expanding into what are today’s outskirts ofSan Dieganshortly after gold discoveries were made at Sutter’s Mill & Telegraph Hill in 1860 and 1861 respectively; these sites would later become known as North Beach (San Francisco) and South Beach (Los Angeles) . Pioneer John Wesley Powell extended his explorations inland beyond Clearlake towards Pershing Road where he found new oil fields later developed by ExxonMobil including Eagle Ford shale formations dating back to 1938 .. By 1870 there were 2 churches located here: First Baptist Church (founded 1865) which served primarily African Americans working off farm incomes until 1889 when white church ownership began expanding; second church was Evangelical Lutheran German Immersion School started 1912 also serving mainly Hispanic children but eventually became a public school district in 1951 .. At this time citrus industry had begun declining due mostly to lack of water resources but following World War II it slowly rebounded thanks partly to Interstate 10 becoming fully open connecting Ventura County with Southern Californiaspanicked market for fresh fruit products;ismancing numerous agricultural subdivisions being developed throughout De Anza Hills ; these developments included groves such as Olivette Oaks built between 1945 – 1950 adjacent to freeway interchange I-10W just outside downtown Los Angeles ; [many more examples could be provided]
