Clovis is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 21,869 at the 2010 census. Clovis is located on the Kern River and is part of the larger Bakersfield metropolitan area. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as Cedar City. The town site was identified in 1851 by George C. Smith and named for Captain John Clovis of the USS Constitution who had fought for US forces against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established at Cedar City on July 10, 1852, and remained open until it was discontinued on May 7, 1865 due to lack of postage stamps. In 1862, Mormons from Utah moved westward into Kern County searching for a new home after they were driven out of Nauvoo by Joseph Smith's critics. They arrived at Cedar City and began settling there soon after its founding. By 1870, Clovis had a population of 350 people and a schoolhouse which served as their church headquarters until 1886 when they constructed their own temple on Sand Canyon Road near present-day Midway Park Boulevard. On March 16, 1893 – one year after California became an independent state – Locomotive No. 9 (a Class I steam locomotive) rolled through town streets with 11 passengers en route from Bakersfield to Sacramento that day with great fanfare followed five days later by a trainload of settlers traveling east from Bakersfield to Joaquin Valley towns including Alpine and Atwater where they disembarked at points north of present-day Midway Park Boulevard before continuing on foot or horseback down what would become State Route 99W to join up with the locomotive’s escort back in Bakersfield two days later completing what would be called “the history trail” overland journey starting east of today’s downtown Clovis
Clovis was a small, scattered Indian village located in Fresno County, California. The village site was first discovered by livestock rustlers during the Gold Rush of 1848. The discovery of gold led to an influx of miners and entrepreneurs who soon started development at the site. By 1870, Clovis had grown to over 100 people and three businesses. In 1875, the town began annexing neighboring villages for municipal purposes. The town's population declined starting in the late 1800s as farming became more prevalent in the area. However, it regained its popularity in the 1940s when a new water system was built near Clovis. Since then, Clovis has been home to a number of high-profile residents including businessperson Don Hennessy and football player Len Dawson.
