However, there are still some remnants that can be seen today including two small cannons that reside on Old Santa Fe Trail Boulevard just east of Interstate 805 Road. Additionally, there is an interpretive trail located adjacent to Regency Armament Center that tells about how this once important military arsenal functioned from 1941-1992. In addition, there are also periodic open-air concerts performed at the nearby Dugway Arsenal National Park that include performance by local bands and artists from time to time. The name comes from the Clovis culture and settlement which is thought to have occurred around 10,500 BC. The first European to visit what is now Clovis was Francisco Vasquez in 1769. The town was founded by George Hearn in 1894 as a rancho on the Rancho San Pedro de la Union south of modern-day Clovis. It became part of Kern County when it was created in 1893. At its peak, the town had a population of 2,000 people and consisted of 80 buildings including a courthouse and jail. In 1951 it lost its charter and merged with nearby Bakersfield to form one city with a combined population of over 100,000 residents today. In 1932 an oil well was drilled near Clovis yielding crude oil that helped start the local economy and gave rise to new businesses such as ranchers who leased land for cattle grazing or drilling wells for petroleum products; this led to increased housing development throughout the early 21st century as farmers were forced out of their land by better access to irrigation water for crops brought about by development efforts

He named his discovery San Joaquin Valley after General José Perfecto de Cosanín's army that had fought against Mexico in 1846-48. On May 6, 1849, during his first trip through this area along the present route of Interstate 5 he noted an elevations range called "Mountain View" about 12 miles (19 km) north of Bakersfield and about 20 miles (32 km) east of Yuma on a bluff overlooking the river valley below. He named it for Josè Castilla y la Real Governor of New Spain who had led this unit in its fight against Mexican forces at Rancho dos Tejas near present day Clovis
