Clovis is a small town in California, located about an hour south of Los Angeles. The name Clovis comes from the nearby mountain Clovis Peak and its many flakes, which are evidence of ice age glaciation. The peak was first sighted by Europeans in 1769 when they were exploring the area after crossing the Trans-Pacific Railroad. At times Clovis has been called the "Cradle of Civilization." Clovis is home to a variety of cultures that have contributed to its unique character: Native Americans, Mexican Americans, Anglo settlers, and Japanese Americans. In recent years, local businesses have attracted tourists who enjoy watching American Indian groups perform traditional dances and visiting Anzalone Park for displays at the museum about early California life. The history of Clovis goes back more than 4,000 years! As one of the oldest towns in California (and one of only two Spanish settlements), it was likely founded by Native Americans on or near present-day Clovis Peak during what is known as the prehistoric period. Through trade with other indigenous peoples and frequent contact with Spanish missionaries and travelers throughout much of North America, Aboriginal people at least knew about salt lakes and Glaciated mountains within miles of their homes. It was not until 1810 when Captain James Cook visited Polynesia while sailing throughbound on his journey around Cape Horn that European sailors began studying ancient Polynesian cultures systematically; he attentively noted rock art along Santa Catalina Island as well as petroglyphs on Rangiroa Island—marking perhaps the first visitation by Europeans to any part of America north of Mexico City (then still under Spanish rule). From this initial encounter came repeated encounters with aboriginal inhabitants who had learned to build canoes from their ancestors—most notably at Point Lobos whereCaptain Cook anchored for three weeks’ repairs in December 1775 following his failed attempt to circumnavigate Cape Horn. Clovis, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 3,782 at the 2000 census and 4,561 at the 2010 census. Clovis is located on the east side of Riverside County, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is bordered by eastern Riverside County to the northeast and west and San Bernardino County to the south and southwest. The first residents of what would become Clovis were Native American people who lived near present-day Groveland. Juan Crespo explored Rancho del Año in 1769 when he reached what is now Claremont Village after journeying through this area on his way tofind new land grants. In 1823, part of Rancho del Año was purchased by James Gillespie from José Maria Oliva for $1,500. At this time there were only 10 families living in Clovis Village which had a total population of 100 people. In 1852 the community name was changed to honor General George Armstrong Custer during his visit here that year as part of celebrations around that time related to his famous victory over Napa Valley Indians at Palo Alto Hills (now known as Eureka). The post office opened in 1853 with Messrs Jobe & McIntyre serving as its first directors under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program which helped revive America’s economy during an era of great depression ravaging much of society including towns such as Encinitas and Dana Point near LAX airport then known as Palos Verdes Peninsula across from Playa Vista beach on Harbor Freeway ..
