The Clovis Coast Guard Station was first established in 1907. The station is now part of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention. In 1935, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was formed as a result of an agreement between the State of California and the Federal government. From 1942 to 1944, the Coast Guard conducted Operation Neptune’s Spear during World War II which destroyed over 100 enemy ships off Southern California. In 1949, the Coast Guard moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Clovis after being relocated from Big Sur in 1948. The station has grown over time and currently employs around 60 people including 30 firefighters and 10 petty officers/boatmen. Since its establishment, the Coast Guard Station has donated many items including boat anchors, lifejackets, flares, hats and T-shirts to various community events throughout Clovis County. Many people in Clovis are proud to have been involved with the coast guard over these years and enjoy giving back through their donations.

The Coast Guard has been gifting gifts to the Clovis community for many years. In 1916, the Coast Guard established a Christmas gift program in which they would give baskets of presents to local families. In 1951, the Coast Guard began giving teddy bears as holiday gifts. From then on, the gift tradition continued with annual donations of new fishing gear and other items for the Clovis Fishermen’s Market. In 1984, the Coast Guard started providing a special limited edition gift basket each year for theClovis Chamber of Commerce. This was followed by a yearly donation of new boats and accessories for local fishermen. The Coast Guard also donated new lifejackets and hats to various local organizations in 1996 and 1998. In 2009, the Coast Guard introduced its Annual Christmas Gift Program which allows residents in coastal communities across California to contribute new or gently used toys, clothes, books or other supplies as well as an extra $25 per item gifted. This program is open to children under 18 years old and their parents/guardians who are age 16 or older at time of donation. 1
Clovis, California is a small town in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located about an hour's drive east of San Francisco and about a day's drive from Los Angeles. Clovis is the home of Mono Lake, one of the largest lakes in North America. The town was founded in 1853 by cattlemen who came to what is now Inyo County from central Mexico via barrel roll trains called "Huey" and "Palo Alto." They named their new community after General George Custer, who had died in 1876 during the Ulysses S. Grant–Milton A. Hershey Expedition into Central America. In 1905, Clovis became part of Imperial County when it was reorganized from parts of Mono and Tuolumne Counties. In 1912, it lost its independent status when Imperial County merged with Riverside County to form the State of California. In 1940, Clovis joined Unincorporated Fresno as its first incorporated municipality; Fresno annexed Unincorporated Kernville on July 15 that year but did not name its new city after itself until November 9th when Mayor Harry Jernigan announced that City Hall would be called "Fresno". Clovis is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 25,752 at the 2010 census. Clovis is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. It was founded in 1903 by John Wesley Powell and named for Clovis Chief who had been killed by Comanches in 1858. Clovis was one of the most important cities during the Gold Rush Period because it served as a supply depot and transportation center for miners travelling to San Francisco Bay. The first post office opened in 1904 and soon became an important commercial center with its own banks, grocery stores, telephone company and newspaper. In 1912 Clovis incorporated as a town with a population of 508 people. The city experienced dramatic growth in the 1920s when World War II began and local businesses turned to production of military supplies such as gasoline, tires and ammunition. However, following World War II the economic decline of California led todeclining births rates and high unemployment among African Americans which contributed to public pressure for racial integration which would come later in Clovis history. In 1960 Clovis became an independent city with a population over 25,000 people while still adhering to certain civic traditions including election day voting on Tuesdaydays throughout the year; fireworks displays on July 4th; marching bands on or around Christmas Day;and annual parades honoring downtown streetcars that make their way through Downtown from East Market Street all the way up 5th Avenue to Main Street where they stop near City Hall Plaza before continuing down 5th Avenue into Downtown again for lunch at Stroud's American Grill before continuing back out onto East Market Street for final parade rides home
