Clovis, California is a small community located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It lies on the east side of the Clovis Hills, a formation that rises to over 2,000 feet (600 meters) above sea level. The town was founded by Mormon settlers in 1858, and has been occupied by various groups of people since then. The first Europeans to visit Clovis were members of the Spanish conquistadors in 1542. They named it San Francisco de las Animas because they found there an animal called anazámba (now known as a jaguar). In 1858, Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Clovis and named it after President Brigham Young’s father-in-law, John C. Fremont. The Mormons built their first homestead here in 1859 and soon started trading with other groups in search of resources such as oil and water. In 1861, due to its strategic location at the junction of four rivers—the Colorado River to the north, Mono Lake to the south, Yucca Valley to the west and Chihuahuan Desert to the east—Clovis became a center for irrigation agriculture. By 1870, however, local farmers had developed more sustainable methods for raising crops such as cotton and wheat instead of relying on irrigation systems. The town experienced some growth during World War II when many military personnel stationed here took advantage of available housing and services. After hostilities ended in 1945, many Clovis residents returned home or went into exile during the Cold War era because they believed that American interventionism would lead to world domination. Since 2000, much attention has been given to Clovis due to its potential significance as a destination for archaeological excavations conducted by both public agencies such as Cal State University–Lompoc and private organizations like Gettysburg Museum LLC., which are looking for evidence related to prehistoric human activity throughout southern California region including those at nearby Mesa Verde National Park
