Clovis is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 14,715 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera–San Joaquin metropolitan area. The name Clovis comes from the Native American tribe known as the Clovis people. They lived on the east side of San Gabriel Valley and in what is now Kern County for about 10,000 years before migrating to central California about 4000 BCE. The first Europeans to see San Gabriel Valley were Spanish explorers in 1769 CE who called it "Los Angeles". In 1851, George Armstrong Cranch proposed that parts of Kern and Inyo counties be formed into a new state by splitting off Alta California from Mexico. On May 7, 1850, US President James K. Polk signed Senate Bill No. 3 creating California as an independent nation with its own government and nationality under the rule of an elected Governor with a veto power over state laws enacted by the Mexican Legislature at Bakersfield (now downtown Los Angeles). This act became effective on January 1, 1851 when US Senator John Hylan introduced Senate Bill No. 4 which created Clovis as an incorporated town within Kingsburg Township on February 6th of that year; one day after Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill near Yuba City ().
