Clovis is a city in Humboldt County, California, United States. The Clovis culture was named for the local Clovis point of reference. It is located along Interstate 5 and its boundaries are the cities of Redding and Tracy. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,611. The name comes from an old Spanish phrase meaning "place where everything is new." The first people to live in what is now Clovis were the Mono people. They arrived around 1650 and eventually founded a village on top of a hill about 2 miles (3 km) south-southwest of present-day downtown Clovis. From here they hunted animals and gathered plants for sustenance until 1775 when they abandoned their villages in favor of living closer to other Native Americans living in nearby Mission San Francisco de Asís and Rancho San Joaquin de la Vega settlements. In 1821, Mormon missionaries came to this region looking for land to build missions; they found no suitable areas but instead beganplanting crops at Mission San Francisco de Asís while also hunting deer, elk, turkey, bear and other game near present-day Tracy. After soil improvements made by farmers at Mission Santa Margarita developed into Rancho Los Padres del Norte east of Tracy in 1848–49, both groups gradually withdrew from each other as cowboys started arriving seeking easy access to cattle drives that traversed much of central California during the Gold Rush era. By 1860 there were only about 10 individuals left living among these scattered tribes across many square miles inside what is now Humboldt County north of Redding
