Clovis, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The Clovis culture was a hunter-gatherer people who built midden sites around 9500 BCE. They are thought to have originated in the Great Lakes region. The first white man to visit Clovis was José Bolsa on December 6, 1818, while exploring the area for potential sites for a new mission. He described it as "a small village of huts placed in a valley surrounded by high mountains." A few weeks later, on December 14, 1818, Californian Jedediah Smith visited the site and named it after his patron saint St. Clotilde. With its strategic location near two major trade routes and abundant game resources, Clovis quickly became an important center of Native American culture and commerce during the 19th century gold rush era in California. In 1852–53 Humboldt County was created from part of Kern County; most of what is now Kern County was annexed by Fresno County in 1872. In 1909 San Bernardino County was carved out of Fresno County and Farley Township became part of Claremont City Limits within San Bernardino County; this change left Claremont with only 8 square miles (20 km2) of land as against 120 square miles (390 km2) for Los Angeles combined at that time. In 1916 Claremont experienced its greatest population growth when World War I veteran Omar Bradley moved his family from Walnut Creek to Claremont following the end of World War I and their return to America after being discharged from service in France at the end of 1918; they founded Redlands Military Institute there soon afterwards which would become one of Southern California's largest universities with over 3400 students enrolled by 1930 according to census data provided by UCLA historian Leslie Sasser
