TheClovis Naval Museum is home to the USS Constitution Museum and the USS Constitution Association. The museum is open during regular hours, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in addition to itsSaturday and Sunday hours of operation. Admission is free for anyone over age 12, but there are some auxiliary charges such as $5 for adults and $3 for children under age 6. The museum has an extensive collection of naval artifacts dating back to 1836 when the Constitution was commissioned into the United States Navy.

Clovis, California was founded on November 4, 1853 by Capt. James Clovis and his party of pioneers. The town was named for the Clovis Culture site in New Mexico. At first, the town consisted of a few log cabins and a millstream that ran through it. In 1854, the first post office was established in Clovis. By 1860, there were 10 homes in town and 350 people living there. In 1865-1866, the United States government built Fort Tejon to protect ranchers from Apache Indians who were raiding their properties. The fort served as a military base until it was abandoned in 1868 when General Grant withdrew Ulysses S. Grant's army from Arizona to take up arms against Native American attacks. The first school in Clovis opened in 1870 and continued operation until 1944 when it burned down. In 1907-1908, construction began on the new courthouse which served as the nucleus of today's downtown area of Clovis. The building is still standing and is used as offices by local government entities such as the City Council and School District #1A today. Clovis became an important center for agricultural production beginning in the early 20th century with large fields being developed around irrigation canals running through it into central Arizona Territory where cotton could be grown
