After spending two years exploring this area, they reported finding no suitable land for human habitation. However, they did discover obsidian tools that were later used as evidence of human presence in this region. In 1846, James Folsom arrived at Rancho Real de la Paz from New Mexico with his family and started a cattle ranch that would eventually become known as Frémont Land Company/Folsom Land Company which included parts of present-day Kern County and portions of eastern Los Angeles County. In 1850, Edward Sabin founded the City of Angels on some land north of downtown Clovis after being inspired by 1840s gold rush stories about gold pans dancing atop mountainsides near Yucca Valley outside Los Angeles In 1852–1853 George Coyote discovered 17 pounds (9 kg) of gold at Anzaldua Springs northeast of modern day Murrieta ().
