The first coffee beans were grown on this property and were roasted and trucked to San Francisco for sale. By 1868, Humble had replaced his original slaves with free laborers and began to roast coffee himself. He also developed a process for roasting whole beans that continues to be used today. Brewing started on the Humble plantation in 1871 when two men from New York City named Ezra Cornell and Nicholas Roebuck took over the job of roasting beans for John D’Angelo & Sons. The company was bought by George Peter Smith in 1875 and began manufacturing its own coffee products, including coffee sacks, filters, brewers' wagons, grinders and more. In 1886, while working at Gossamer Coffee Company in Riverside County, America's first commercialinfeldirased all types of beans from their plantations under an order from Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria – marking the beginning of a new era for coffee production in America. By 1898, most of San Bernardino County had been acquired by William Randolph Hearst who began developingcoffee estates there as part of his enterprises such as Anheuser-Busch Brewery (now known as AB InBev)and Harpo's grocery chain (now known as Kroger). A small groupof farmers who grew sugarcane near Coachella joined Hearst's forcesto form the Sugar Beets Growers Cooperative Association to promotecoffeeproduction on their properties around Coachella Valley. This association would later becomethe National Coffee Corporation which purchasedHearst's interest in 1961. Coachella, California is a city in the desert of Southern California. The population was 21,121 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Riverside County. Coachella Valley has been inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation dating back to 10,000 BC. In 1853, gold was discovered in Coachella Valley and made its first appearance on the map in 1857 when Jedediah Smith found gold near present-day Palm Springs. By 1861, there were over 100 miners living in Coachella Valley. Mining operations continued until 1915 when World War I interrupted production. After the war, many farmers began to settle in Coachella Valley because of good soil and cheap water supplies; this led to an increase in manufacturing during the late 20th century and into the 21st century. The City of Coachella was incorporated on February 2nd 1904 as a result of passage by voters of Proposition K (An Act To Incorporate The City Of Coachella) which called for “a municipal organization similar to that now existing within the city limits” while also stating that: "It is hereby declared that all men are created equal and have certain inherent rights which should not be infringed upon without just cause." In 1916, a post office was established within what would become downtown Coachello; this location served as an interim stop before coming to its current location on April 17th 1931 just west-of-the- corner Main Street/Upper Avenues where it currently stands today. On November 5th 1928, San Bernardino County acquired lands east from downtown Coachello including present day downtown Riverside; this land had originally been part ofCoaching Gold Mines Ranch which straddled both sides of Interstate 15 between Indio andprises throughout much of agricultural valley up until 1922 when USGS surveys designated rivers flowing intosprings immediately east off I-15 south edge were developed as golf courses instead making irrigation possible required for mining purposes only later seeing residential development built around those golf courses extending well beyond original ranch boundaries with streets running parallel northsouthwest eastwest other than one block due north Limit on houses per acre remains today remnant despite public protest during early 2000s against oversized housing developments resulting from new owner investment primarily outside city Limits since then
