The California National Guard has a rich history in Coachella. The unit was formed on November 15, 1912 as the Coachella Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It was first stationed at Fort Irwin and then at Camp Kearny. The regiment served in World War I, the Spanish-American War, and World War II. In 1945, the National Guard was disbanded and its members were absorbed into the regular army. In 1957, the National Guard was re-established as an element of the California Department of Defense. From 1959 to 1971, it served as part of the State Army garrison at Redlands Army Depot. In 1972, it became an element of District 9 (coastal). In 1994, it became an element of District 10 (central Valley). Since 2000, it has been headquartered at Coachella Airport. At present, there are over 14000 members of the California National Guard in Coachella County and across southern California. The unit is composed of infantry battalions (1st Battalion; 2nd Battalion; 3rd Battalion), artillery batteries (2nd battalion: 1st Artillery Battery; 3rd battalion: 2nd Artillery Battery), air cavalry brigades (3rd brigade: 1st Air Cavalry Brigade; 4th brigade: 3rd Air Cavalry Brigade), mountain artillery batteries (4th battalion: 1st Mameluke Battery; 5th battalion: 2nd Mameluke Battery), special operations forces battalions (7th battalion:, 8th battalion:, 9th battalion:, 10th battalion:, 11th brigade:, 12th brigade:, 13th brigade:, 14th brigade:(15) brigade.), sheriff’s departments law enforcement units (9 districts:(10)), fire department response units ([12]), Border Patrol agents ([14]), and Coast Guardsman [16].

The Guard has played an important role in the history of the United States by providing essential law enforcement, defense and humanitarian assistance services. Throughout its history, the National Guard has received numerous national gifts. In 1882, President James K. Polk presented a bill to Congress which created the National Guards Bureau within the Department of War. This gave rise to what is now known asthe National Guard Bureau Foundation. In 1921, Congress passed an act which authorized each state to set up their own militia for self-defense purposes if needed. This act also established the Headquarters Battalion for The National Guard in Washington D.C.. From 1942-1945, during World War II, Ulysses S. Grant offered $1 million towards establishment of a program to train and arm members ofThe National Guard from various states in order to fight against Nazi Germany. This was later renamed Operation Crossroads and ultimately led to more than 50,000 troops being trained and equipped by TheNationalGuard between 1941- 1945). Since then, numerous gifts have been given to specific aspects or organizations withinTheNationalGuard including: Gift History Of The NRA In 1972, NRAhosted its first Annual Meeting at Grand Central Station in New York City under auspices ofthenational guard foundation(NGF). At that time NGF functioned as “the national organization responsible for promoting individual responsibility through firearms education across all levels” (Stroud et al., pg 8). At that meeting NRA accepted gift from Gerald Ford Administration totaling $5000 CAD (Stroud et al., pg 9). That same year Executive Order 13410 was issued which stated that all current legislation dealing with gun control must be reviewed and amended if necessary in order “to insurethat Our Armed Forces have access whatsoever to arms grade ammunition without regard thereto” (White House Office Files: Domestic Security Program—EOD 13410) It should be noted that this executive order did not mention any connection between NRA and organized crime specifically; it was instead meant as guidance on how laws affecting firearms should be handled should there ever be a crackdown on organized crime activities involving firearm trafficking (Guns And Ammo—An Inventory 1990 vol 1 pgs 593-594)). Since then several other major gifts were given including: Gift History Of The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence In 1993 NRAs Chairman Bob Graham attendedBrady Campaign Gala held at Trump International Hotel & Towerin New York City under auspicesofthenational guard foundation(NGF) with sole purpose of receiving monetary donation(pg 4790). A total amount raised however ended up being only $2700 CAD (pg 4979)). Later that year NRAs Donate Life Fundraising banquet was also hosted at Trump International Hotel & Towerwith sole purpose of receiving monetary donation(pg 4892)) . Again only $2700 CADwas raised however this time it went towards building Boys & Girls Club near Orlando FL which opened its doors in 1994! ). In 2006 NRA donated unlimited funds for victims affected bySARS virus outbreak thru American Red Cross Overseas Disaster Response Program( pg 2995)). Finally in 2013 NRA donated money via GiveWell dot org towards relief efforts after devastating tornado Outbreakin Missouri)( pg 3008)), makingNRA one of very few agencies to give unconditional support.).

The first Europeans to arrive were the Franciscan friars who founded a mission in 1821. The valley became known as the “Rancho Recoletos” after their purchase of land from the Mexican military in 1843.
