The United States Air Force has been providing aircrew, equipment and other support to our local military communities in California for over seventy years. The USAF is the largest peacetime provider of aircrew and equipment to any nation in the world. In recent years, the USAF has shifted its emphasis from traditional large-scale arms purchases to a more tailored approach that focuses on partner nations and regions in order to achieve our common goal of deterrence and defense. In Coalinga, through its history as an important community in Southern California’s aerospace industry, the USAF has become a key part of local culture. For many people here, it is what brings life meaning into their days. Our community rallied together around our shared love of flying – whether we were young kids learning how to fly atController Base or adults watching friends serve their country overseas. From fighter jets parked on our streets during World War II to today’s KC-135 Stratotankers aerial refueling aircraft stationed here at Mountain Home AFB, the USAF has always played an important role in Coalinga’s aviation history. Today’s Air Force provides opportunities for residents like myself who have contributed something valuable back to society. It gives me hope that we can continue making America great by continuing this tradition of service and support – not just for ourselves but also for those who have served before us and are currently serving abroad. What is the USAF? The USAF (United States Air Force) is the aerial warfare branch of the United States Armed Forces. It was created on July 1, 1947, as a merger of the USAAF and the US Naval Air Service. The service has an operational force of more than 180,000 personnel in 45 countries. The USAF's mission is to protect U.S. soil and interests at home and abroad through air power, space operations, intelligence gathering, modernization of its forces and support for security sectors worldwide. The origins of the USAF can be traced back to World War I when America entered into a Treaty with Great Britain setting up an international aviation organization calledthe Allied Powers Aviation Conference in 1916 which established rules for air travel between allies by establishing set intervals between flights and providing each side with an equal number of aircraft types used by all participating nations. In 1919 these same Allies createdthe American Civil Aeronautics Administration (ACA). The ACA would become the precursor to today's FAA while still under British control until it was transferred to the newly constituted United States Department of Commerce in 1933
Army Air Forces - 1944-1945 The USAAF flew combat missions against the Japanese in World War II. In 1944, theAAF created theives branch to manage androstenedione, a precursor to testosterone, which was stockpile for use in bombing raids. The wing also began to produce its own bombers, the A-10 Thunderbolt II. In 1945, the USAF disbanded due to budgetary limitations.

Coalinga was founded by Juan Manuel Rodríguez in 1848. It became a town in 1851. The first post office was established at Coalinga in 1850. In 1861, the California Central Railroad arrived and built a depot here. The town developed into a small agricultural community with few businesses until the early 1900s when word spread about the resources of the area and new opportunities opened up.
