The history of the United States Army in Coalinga, California can be traced back to 1846. The first U.S. military presence in the area was a small detachment of soldiers sent to assist Mexican forces during the war of 1848. From this small outpost, the American military grew over time and by 1850 had established a small post on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1862, while still under Mexican control, General George Buell organized an expedition against Fort Tejon in nearby San Francisco Bay. This action prompted President Abraham Lincoln to order Ulysses S. Grant to send an army into Southern California to protect Californians from Buell’s incursion. In 1863, after successfully repelling another attack by Buell and his men at Heaps Valley, Grant ordered construction of Fort Fillmore on Signal Hill in Coalinga (later called Camp Pendleton). The fort served as a staging ground for both Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War and was also used as a prison for POWs following the battle of Buena Vista Creek. After World War I ended in 1918, General John J Pershing ordered the decommissioning of most American military installations throughout California due to budget constraints. However, Fort Fillmore continued serving as a garrison until 1922 when it was sold to private interests and demolished. In 1934-35, Army Lieutenant Colonel Harry Humes reconstructed part ofFort Fillmore into what is now known asHume Barracks within Camp Pendleton National Military Park (now part of Marine Corps Base Coalinga). The barracks were renamed “Hume Tower” in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Harry Hume who supervised their renovation project. On July 16th 1945 (the day after Japan suffered its surrender), Major General James Fenton dedicated Hume Tower as “The Soldiers’ Memorial Building” in memory of all those who lost their lives during World War II . Despite being renovated thirty years later, Hume Tower is still not occupied by any active troops and remains one of Coalinga’s only extant historical landmarks

In 1984 Coalinga became part of Riverside County when it was combined with other western Riverside County cities including Downey and Hermosa Beach.
