Coalinga is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County, about east of Bakersfield and north of Delano. The town was founded by pioneers in 1859 as a small mining camp called "Galloway" after George Galloway, one of the first white men to cross the Mojave Desert from Nevada. In 1868, Coalinga acquired its current name when a wagon train stopped there for supplies on their way from Sutter's Fort in Sacramento to Bakersfield. The railroads made it a convenient staging point for goods moving through the area and also increased trade with nearby towns such as Needles and Visalia. The last coal mine closed in 1959 and most of the buildings were demolished in that decade; however, some remnants remain today including a post office building (1958), hotel (1961), store (1963) and water tower (1964). Today part of Coalinga is open rural land with fishing ponds, new housing developments and retail stores concentrated along two main thoroughfares known as "Old Town Road" and "New Town Road". In recent years much development has taken place within walking distance of OldTown Rd., giving rise to concerns about possible encroachment upon undeveloped farmland west of town limits. Despite this concern some residents continue to live near their churches or schools despite fears that they may be next target for development should something happen to their homes.
