Coalinga, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in Stanislaus County. The first inhabitants of what is now Coalinga were the Ohlone people. They hunted and gathered resources near the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. In 1851, prospectors discovered gold in this area and started to come toCoalinga to find it. By 1855, there were over 100 people living in Coalinga. In 1865, an act was passed by Congress that provided for white men to settle on public lands northwest of Stockton in order to secure water supplies for agriculture and industry. This area became known as Rancho Atwater because George Atwater purchased part of it from the Mexican government. The townsite was founded on November 8, 1868 by Jens Hansen with help from his brother-in-law Peder Nielsen and others associated with him. Prior to its establishment as a town, Coalinga consisted of several scattered farmsteads scattered around at various points along the riverbank between Stockton and north Fresno counties; one such location being about three miles west of present day downtown Coalinga on Siskiyou Boulevard opposite Donner Park across from Chinese Consolidated School (now Donner Elementary). The name “Coalinga”meaning “coal production ground”was derived from this location because early residents would go out into nature to collect coal whatever way possible including building their own furnaces using logs they found while exploring these new surroundings which did not yet have electricity or running water available! As reported by local historian Drue Ayer: “Most likely at least some early settlers brought plants back with them when they left America – tomatoes, chili peppers etceteras – so that later generations could grow them hereabouts (…) [D]uring most of those years before electrical lights were introduced hereabouts much work went on around fires which often burned until dark […] Coal wasn’t easy or cheap to come by back then so there must have been quite a few households who produced their own heat during those winter months!” Mining operations began only after World War II when oil discoveries began occurring deeper down within California about 75 miles east of Coalinga near Anza-Borrego Desert Regional Aquarium where crude oil had been discovered also prior but without any significant impact on nearby communities like Coalinga which depended almost entirely upon agriculture for their sustenance however duelling geological forces related primarily to mountain ranges had resulted in very large earthquakes throughout Southern California over many decades prior generating destructive tsunamis along both coasts thus compromising inland Harboromas significantly disrupting fishing grounds offcoastal Peninsula creating homeless encampments amounting cumulatively dozens for each yea
The first settlers to the area that is now Coalinga, California were Alexander Miller and his brother John in 1827. The name of the town was chosen in honor of Captain George Coalinga who fought against Mexico in 1846. The town gradually grew up around the post office and stores. In 1853, a school was built and it continued to serve as an important educational resource until 1914. In 1865, the first railroad ever built into California was built through this region and by 1870,Coalinga had become an important commercial center with a large population. In 1915, World War I began and Coalinga saw a large influx of soldiers from various parts of the country. Many jobs were available for these men at local businesses but because of World War I, there was also a big demand for munitions which caused prices for goods to skyrocket. This led to many families moving out of Coalinga and into other areas during this time period. In 1935, when Californio Native American Indians became known as the Chumash tribe, they started living in this region after being forced out of their previous homes by white settlers who claimed they were reserving land for them specifically. Over time, some members of the Chumash tribe decided to stay in this region while others moved away due to social changes or difficult living conditions. By 1940, there were only about 10 remaining Chumash people living inCoalinga- most of whom lived on remote mountain reservations nearby
