Coalinga, California is a small town in Stanislaus County, California, located on the San Joaquin River. The population was 2,852 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Coalinga was John Bartlett who arrived in 1859 and platted what is now the town on March 6, 1860. By 1865 there were twelve families living here, all under the leadership of Captain James Cushing. In 1870, Captain Cushing's son Commodore George Cushing erected a sawmill along the river near present-day Coalinga High School. In 1875-1876 Jno. Hickey built a gristmill and store at lower Main Street and then removed to his current home at 5555 Sacramento Avenue in 1895. Prior to this time most business activities took place at the Captains Store which had been built about 1850 byCaptain James Bancroft on land grants from General Antonio Lomas de la Vega. A post office called "Coalinga" was established in 1872, but discontinued operations due to anti-slavery sentiment during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Coalinga is a town located in Marin County, California. The first permanent settler was George Wright in 1853. The post office was established at Coalinga on January 8, 1854, and the town began to be populated in 1861 by miners from nearby Sutro Mines. In 1865, the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Coalinga and soon made it one of their main hubs for freight transportation. In 1876, the last spike was driven into the railroad line at Coalinga; this caused a great deal of economic disruption as people had to switch to buses or cars to get to work. The economy slowly improved over time as various businesses opened up and people started spending more money outside of Coalinga. It wasn’t until after World War II when things started continuing to improve as the area became known for its wine industry. Today, Coalinga is a thriving community with many active businesses and activities that keep residents engaged.
