The navy has a long and storied history in Coalinga, California. The first ships of the United States Navy were built here in 1846 and the town was named for Commodore Matthew Perry during his 1853 visit to California. The Commodore’s task force fought off Mexican forces at Isla San Diego before finally arriving in Stockton 10 days later. This event is widely considered to be the beginning of American naval power in California. In 1847, the USS Constitution was used as a Naval Hospital on Coronado Island during the California Gold Rush. In 1861, she served as flagship of Commodore George Dewey's squadron during his campaign against Confederate forces at San Francisco Bay. The Constitution sailed from San Francisco to Honolulu in 1865 with General Douglas MacArthur to lead an American attack on Moi'i Ridge near Pearl Harbor. Coalinga, California is a small town located in the East Bay region of San Francisco. The population was 5,774 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Contra Costa County seat and has a large shopping center and IMAX theatre. The first white person to live in Coalinga was James Fonda who arrived in 1847. In 1870, John Coyle founded the paper mill here which produced newsprint for San Francisco newspapers. The mill closed down in 1951 and was replaced by an aluminum plant that operated until 1984. In 1978, Coalinga started using natural gas as its primary energy source with production from an installed methane storage project beginning in 1982. The plant produces about 26% of the town's output today and provides employment for about 50 people. Today, Coalinga is known for its Mediterranean cuisine which features dominates such dishes as tagliatelle with olive oil, garlic and tomato sauce; falafel wraps with tahini sauce; spanakopita with feta cheese; pitta pockets filled with chicken or lamb fillings; and stuffed grape leaves called "grape leaves."

Coalinga, California was a small town located in Fresno County, California. The population of Coalinga was 1,020 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town that is virtually abandoned. The first settlers to the area were prospectors who discovered gold deposits in 1848. By 1858, there were twenty-one people living in Coalinga. Mining and agriculture began to take hold in the area during the late 1800s, and by 1912, Coalinga had a population of 301 people. The post office served the community until it closed on October 15th, 1923. As mining activity dwindled and production decreased throughout most of California during the early 21st century, few if any remnants of Coalinga remain today save for an isolated schoolhouse which still stands vacant and unused despite being listed as one of America's "most endangered" historical landmarks by Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). In recent years there has been talk among some preservationists about restoring or refurbishing what remains of the once thriving former community as part of an effort to bring back more life to struggling communities across America which are Struggling To Keep Their History Alive (HTHA).
