Coalinga, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the north side of the San Joaquin Valley, about 20 miles east of Bakersfield and 30 miles south of Stockton. As of the 2010 census, Coalinga had a population of 1,531. The name "Coalinga" comes from Spanish meaning "coal heap." Coalinga was founded in 1887 by James W. Haughton and his brother-in-law Hiram Clarke as an Agricultural and Mining Settlement on the site now occupied by Coalinga High School. In 1912, it became a community when the townsite was purchased by Arthur C. Burnett and his wife Alice Lomas Burnett from Waddell Price & Company for $2,000 cash. In 1915, Burnett began to operate a small hotel called the Burnett Hotel which remain in operation today as one of the few remaining structures in town. In 1922, Walter Fenton opened the first service station in Coalinga when he erected a store at what is now First Street And G Streets. The Station served many customers until it closed its doors in 1966 because it could not compete with gasoline prices that were then being charged at much higher levels than they are today. A new station was built adjacent to First Street And G Streets (now Fourth Street) and operated until 1984 when it burned down due to an arson attack by teenagers who thought they were making firecrackers out of coal scuttle cans. In 1988, Chevron Corporation leased land next to First Street And G Streets from Burnett's son-in-law Donny Burnett for development into what would eventually become Chevron's largest regional oil refinery complex ever constructed outside North America - referred to locally as "The Great White Way". Coalinga is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sierra Nevada foothills region and lies on both sides of the Kern River. Although it has no formal water supply, its fame as a coalmining community dates back to 1881 when prospectors discovered coal seams near present-day Coalinga. Coal mining continued until 1971, when production was curtailed by environmental restrictions oncoal mining in California. Today, Coalinga remains an important center for Iron ore and other coal minerals processing. The first permanent settler in what became Coalinga was George A. Smith who arrived in 1847 from Missouri under the auspices of the Mormon Battalion. He built his first house on Fourth Street about nine miles east of present-day Coalinga. From this location he surveyed land for another Mormon colony called Fort Bridger which would later become Salt Lake City. When word spread that gold could be found in this area, many people came to stake their claim and begin construction of homes and businesses around what would become known as "Coal Creek". In 1881 a group of prospectors led by Captain John Sutter discovered coal seams near present-day Coalinga while exploring for gold nearby; they named their discovery "San Francisco Hill" after San Francisco (then part of Mexico). Mining continued until 1971 due to environmental constraints then upon American industry following Nixon's vowing to clean up America's energy sector; however still significant output continues today with over 2 million metric tons exported annually from Coalinga alone Today many descendants live here including some who were born or raised hereabouts coalfields continue producing natural gas and oilfield services are also well developed .
Coalinga was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1769. It was named for the Mexican saltpeter mine, Coalinga del Oro, about 15 miles to the south. The first post office in Coalinga was established in 1872. The town of Coalinga began to grow rapidly after a railroad station and depot were built there in 1905. A water tower and reservoir were also built in 1915, and a smallpox hospital opened in 1925. In 1944, the military barracks at nearby San Miguel Lake were moved into the town and renamed Fort Huachuca. The fort closed down in 1957 and most of its materials were removed and used at nearby Brawley Army Air Base until it closed too.
