The community grew rapidly and soon had a school, church, store, and several other businesses. In 1857 a railroad was constructed through the community and it began to grow even more quickly. By 1860 Colton had a population of over 400 people. In 1865 the town became an incorporated municipality and continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 1920s when it had a population of 2,000 people. After World War II the population decreased as many of Colton's residents went to work in nearby cities or outside of California.
