The history of the Colton Air Force Base began with a small detachment of American soldiers in 1927. The first airfield on the base was built by the military to store and use aircraft during World War I. In 1940, when Colton became aAAFbase, it had five grass runways and two hangars. In 1945, when Colton became an all-weather airbase, it also acquired its first jets. By 1959, Colton had become one of the largest USAF bases in the world with over 100 aircraft installations. The following year saw the construction of new command and control buildings as part of an overall expansion program at AFB. This included the addition of three large hangar wings that would house up to thirty-six Boeing 707s each. On 1 July 1968, Colonel John Saucier assumed command from Colonel Harry Kappeler after Kappeler's death in a flying accident. With Saucier as commander, AFB continued its rapid growth throughout 1969 with additions to include six more large hangars and ninety-four smaller ones across variousgrounds around town; eighty-eight percent of all wing activities were now conducted indoors using retractable roofs or other means for greater efficiency and cooling off during summer months. An additional twenty-one squadrons were added to support bomber operations; Tactical Air Command (TAC) was transferred from USAAF to USAF custody on 15 August 1970 under Operation Neptune's Spear which saw RAF Tornado GR5s attacking targets within Iran alongside Army Aviation units supported by USAF fighters operating fromColonel John Saucier's newly built college campus airstrip east of town – this facility is now known as Edwards Air Force Base outside Palm Springs., along with numerous housing developments located adjacent to AFB providing permanent housing for servicemen and their families during peacetime while squadron headquarters were located at Peterson AFB outside Sacramento., thus increasing AFB's population by almost one hundred percent since its creation just shy of seventy years ago! Colton, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. Colton is known for its active farming community and local golf courses. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Colton were Spanish miners who prospected for gold along the lower course of the Colorado River. They discovered a large deposit of gold but it was not exploited until 1849 when Colonel George Custer and his regiment went searching for the source of the Colorado River. They found a vein of gold and named it Cache Valley after General James Hyrum Cooke’s headquarters at Fort Bridger on the Wyoming border where he had cached supplies. In 1872, Jens Jensen started to cultivate wheat hereabouts and later distillery products were born as well including Malibu Rye whiskey and other spirit products such as vodka and brandy. Production increased rapidly due to good soil conditions, natural springs, irrigation systems and access to markets in nearby Los Angeles and San Francisco.
