The Colton Army National Guard was organized on July 1, 1881. The mission of the Guards was to provide defense of the state and protect its citizens from invasion or insurrection. The first unit to be raised in Colton was the 3rd Infantry Battalion which consisted of only a handful of men. In November 1881, the battalion was re-organized into a regiment and name changed to 2nd Regiment California Volunteers (2RCV). In 1897, 2RCV became part of Regular Army and began service in Mexico during the Pancho Villa Revolt. After returning home, the regiment fought in various campaigns until World War I when it joined General Pershing’s Expeditionary Force. It served in Europe until 1919 when it returned home to Colton where it disbanded. In 1927, 2RCV reformed as a battery (7th Field Artillery Battalion) successor to 4th Artillery Battalion that had been disbanded two years earlier. It remained an artillery unit until 1959 when it converted to cavalry and redesignated 7th Cavalry Regiment (Colton CA). In 1965, 7CR became part of III Corps reserve under command of First Army Headquarters located at Fort Irwin near San Diego County line. The United States Army Garrison Colton was established in 1852 as a military post on the now-defunct Rancho San Bernardino del Norte near Colton. The post served as a garrison for soldiers stationed in and around the area until 1862, when it was moved to its present location. In 1868, the U.S. Congress granted Colton town status, which led to increased civilian enrollment at the post. The garrison closed in 1870 and was deactivated under President Grant's orders in 1872. However, it reopened in 1873 as part of the nationwide surge in military installations following the Mexican-American War. Afterward,Colton continued to serve as an army garrison until its closure by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 1, 1940 due to World War II troop commitments elsewhere in California.

In recent years, however, Colton's population has been slowly declining due to various factors including suburbanization and an increase in commuting to nearby cities such as Redding and Sacramento.
