The Coast Guard has been providing essential service to the maritime community for over 100 years. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect human life and property, support coastal communities through emergency response, and provide leadership in the development of maritime safety policies and practices. The Coast Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to 1847 when the United States Congress authorized the creation of a coast guard force under the command of Rear Admiral John A. Farragut. The first units were stationed at New York City and Philadelphia. In 1878, Congress created an operations branch within the Coast Guard called its "First District." This district was responsible for patrolling California's Marine National Monument coastline from Point Lobos to Monterey Bay. In 1920, this First District was renamed "District Six" and changed its operational responsibilities again in 1936 when it became responsible for all coastal regions east of Long Beach, California. These changes reflect advances in technology which made it easier for members of the Coast Guard to respond rapidly to emergencies on both land and water surfaces. During World War II, members of the Coast Guard played an important role in saving countless lives by performing search-and-rescue missions as well as providing transportation assistance during combat naval engagements off America's coasts. After World War II ended, many new technologies were developed which made it possible for member vessels to conduct more efficient patrols along our coastlines including radar technology and sonar capabilities that allowed us see objects up close without ever having them sunk or damaged by weather or enemy action (such as submarines). In 1969, Congress passed legislation authorizing establishment of a special section within the Coast Guard called "the Merchant Ship Squadron". This squadron was charged with investigating commercial shipping incidents which could lead to death or serious injury aboard ships while operating in American ports or on American soil - such as pollution violations or smuggling offences. In 1978, this same legislation established a navigational service called electronic transponders (ETs) which would allow merchant vessels greater accuracy in their navigation so that they could avoid obstacles such as reefs or shoals while traveling through international waters. ETs also helped reduce collisions between merchant vessels and fishing boats because fishermen now had information about where their catches might be located based on data collected by ETs onboard fishing boats

The town quickly grew and prospered thanks to its fertile land, rich Natural Resources, and easy access to transportation. By 1890, Colton had a population of over 4,000 people and prosperous businesses. During the early years of his presidency, Ulysses S. Grant helped build up Colton's economy by donating land to the town for development. He also encouraged local businesses to establish themselves in Colton with the goal of creating a strong community that could benefit from their product or services. In addition, Grant funded several civic projects within the town such as building a schoolhouse and a new courthouse. The townsfolk continue to thrive during today's times thanks to their hard work and dedication towards keeping their community vibrant and thriving. They have never given up on their dream of becoming one of California's " eternal communities."
In 1847, Colton was founded by James A. Cooley and his family. The town was named for George Washington Colton, an early settler in the area. In 1849, the first post office was established in Colton and the name of the town was changed to Butte in 1851. The first school in Butte opened in 1852 and had a population of only 10 students. In 1860, Butte became a city and the name of the city changed to Colton again in 1865. The first fire department that Colton ever had was organized on October 3, 1865 when three men from Butte set out to extinguish a small fire at Harry's hotel. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses inColton with a population of around 1,000 people. By 1880, there were over 500 businesses with a population of over 10,000 people and Colton had become one of Northern California's most important commercial centers
