The town was founded in 1887 by John Colton and his wife Anna Maria. The name comes from Latin "Colonia", meaning "place for sale". The community began as a tiny settlement on the east side of Ramona Valley near present-day Ramona. In 1888, settlers named it after General James Kiefer Colton who had led an expedition against Mono Indians two years earlier. In 1896, the post office was moved to Colton from neighboring Porterville. In 1909, Hilda Ewing organized a grammar school in Colton which became known as Monterey Junior High School until 1971 when it merged with nearby Del Norte Jr./Sr high school to form Monterey-Del Norte HS District 3 (Monterey Peninsula) Unified School District (MPUSD). At that time, the name reverted back to Colton Junior High School District #1 and it remains so today. It was only in 1984 when MPUSD formed its own city government and adopted a new slogan: "A Community That Connects." According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 population report, 2,890 people lived in Colton excluding any unincorporated areas within its boundaries; this made it one of Kern County's smallest towns by population size! With such a small population size and limited services available within its borders there are few if any businesses or organizations that can truly call themselves local here - most citizens rely primarily on countywide services like public health clinics and social services provided through government agencies like CalWORKS or CHP/FBI coordination centers located just outside of town limits! However even with these limitations there are still many residents here who actively work to make their community better - many individuals have taken on leadership roles within their local churches or civic organizations! Within our smaller town there is no lack of interest or activity in building something better - everyone seems eager to contribute what they know and feel they can improve upon while also enjoying some semblance of control over their lives...
