The first mention of Colton in recorded history is from 1795 when Juan Francisco de Quiros reported seeing a village on the San Joaquin River with about 30 houses and 20 men living there. By 1834, Colton had become a small rancho called Rancho Nevada de los Angeles (Rancho Nevada). It was during this time that graziers prospecting for silver discovered oil shale near the town site in 1858. This led to new development in Colton as people began leasing land around Rancho Nevada for agriculture or mining purposes. On November 15, 1859, American pioneer Ezra Sutter arrived at Rancho San José with his family and built their first home there. His arrival marked the beginning of what would be an important era in California history - white settlement of these parts by Americans. With Sutter's help, farming activity increased in Colton and other areas surrounding Rancho Nevada until 1860 when gold was discovered at Sierra Madre del Sur in Northern California. Large numbers of Chinese immigrants followed suit over the next few years as gold prices plummetedmerchants stopped traffic on the Sacramento River because they could not afford transportation costs associated with getting goods across state lines
