In 1892, a group of men and women bought some land around the current location of Colton and began to grow coffee. They used small scale methods such as irrigation and hand picking their beans. The early growers were able to find quality beans that were sweet and smooth. In 1915, an Italian family moved into the town and started selling coffee from a truck on Main Street. The Italians were very successful in doing this and helped spread the word about good coffee in Colton. Over time, other families joined the Italian family and soon there were many different businesses selling coffee inColton. This allowed people to get a good cup of coffee without leaving their homes. In 1955, a man named Don Pitzer decided to open his own business in Colton. He started by buying some trees near his house and growing his own beans. He was very successful at this and helped bring new life to Coltons Coffee Shop which had been closed for years before! Colton is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The first permanent settler in Colton was James Laughlin, who arrived in 1849 and built a cabin on the east side of the creek. By 1860, there were sixteen buildings in Colton and 350 people living there. In 1865, the US Army built Fort Colton to protect settlers from Native Americans and outlaws who had settled near what is now Colton. The fort was abandoned in 1867 when it became evident that Native Americans would not be afraid to attack white settlements if they felt threatened by them. In 1873-74, traders J.P. Morgan and George Hearst visited Colton for trade goods with Mexican led menaced by bandits known as Pancho Villa's Bandits (the precursor to today's Mexican Federal Police). When news of Villa's raiders reached the townsfolk, they quickly erected fences around their homes and stockpiled supplies to avoid being raided or looted; this action may have saved many residents' lives because bandsit raids are common among frontier farmers during this time period. One significant event that took place in early 1870s withinColton was an anti- Chinese riot which followed a public disturbance between Chinese laborers working on local farms and Anglo-Americans who wanted them closed down; these riots are also sometimes referred to as "The China Riot". This violence marked one turning point where black American labor began gaining acceptance into white society throughout California while previously it had been viewed with suspicion or disdain by both groups due to cultural differences - something which would continue until after World War II when most Southern Californians accepted African Americans as full citizens with similar rights as any other citizens

After the Mexican-American War in 1848, California was divided between United States and Mexico. The American settlers who were not immediately subject to Mexican jurisdiction began to come through various routes, including the Donner Party overland from Northern California in winter 1849-50. The Donner Party reached Colton on April 6, 1850, after marching for days without food or water. They had been following the Carson River south from Feather Falls Guides Station. In a letter home to his family, Jedediah Smith wrote: "I have marched all night and am now at camp close by the head of this river which is about 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide." On April 15th, 1850, Major Leland Stanford founded Stanford University in Palo Alto on land that he had recently acquired east of Colton along what is now called Meadow Road. On October 14th of that year (the date of US Independence), General Sam Houston surrendered at San Jacinto Heights near Colton with an army of 20,000 men under his command. After this victory over Spanish forces in Texas and Mexico, many American citizens migrated westward into what is today California seeking new opportunities for themselves and their families. Some people who journeyed west during this period included Captain Hormisdas Howe (July 4th 1840 – December 10th 1851) who led a group of 26 pioneers across Nevada desert on horseback in March 1852; James Fenton (1820 – 1888), a Mormon leader who joined Brigham Young's Mormons soon after they arrived in Utah; Cornelius Vanderbilt (1814-1900), founder of New York City's largest shipping company; banker Salmon Pelly (1795 - 1865); John Sutter (1819 - 1916), founder and first sheriff of Sacramento County; George Custer (1846 - 1901), generalmajor Ulysses S Grant's cavalry commander during the Indian Wars
The town of Colton was founded in 1853 by James H. Colton and his wife, Lydia. The town was named for Colonel John Fenton, who had donated the land for the town. The first store in the town was built on Main Street in 1854. The side streets were called North, South, West, and East Streets. In 1857, a post office was established in Colton and the name changed to Amador County Courthouse in 1903. In 1916, Amador County became part of California and Colton lost its status as a county seat.
