Today, Colton is one of Southern California's most Republican communities—although it does have some libertarian leanings as well—and its economy depends largely on tourism and aviation industry jobs outside of agriculture (especially wilderness camping). As such, it has often been at odds with more liberal nearby towns over issues like gay marriage or gun control laws (the latter beingAmendment 2), although it has generally shown support for these causes throughout history
