During World War II, Colton played an important role as one of the largest military installations in Southern California because it housed over 2 million troops during the war effort. In 1945, when Southern California was placed under military jurisdiction following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima AND Nagasaki, Colton became one of six towns within that region without any civilian control over their affairs (the others being Indio Heights (1946), Hawthorne (1947), Mira Mesa (1948), Valley Center (1945) and Topanga Canyon (1945)). After World War II ended,Colton experienced rapid growth thanks to new industry such as automotive manufacturing which moved from Torrance into town in the early 1960s followed by other heavy industry such as plastics production which has continued through today’s times at nearby Fullerton. Due largely to these industrial developments along with population growth rates that have outpaced inflationaries throughout much of recent history – despite occasional bouts of recession – ColTON has become one of Orange County’s most economically vibrant communities surpassing even Newport Beach .
