The history of the Colton National Guard is a long and diverse one. The first national guard unit in Colton was organized on December 3, 1892. It was called the “First Battalion of California Infantry” and its purpose was to protect the town during the Gold Rush era. The battalion served for three years before disbanding in 1896 due to lack of manpower. In 1902, a new national guard unit was formed in Colton and its purpose was to provide law enforcement services for the city. The unit served for six years before disbanding in 1916 due to financial problems. In 1921, a new national guard unit was organized in Colton and its purpose was to provide emergency medical services for the city. The unit served until 1978 when it disbanded due to budget cuts. In 1978, a new national guard unit was organized in Colton and its purpose is to provide community policing services for the city. Theunit has served since then and it currently exists as part of the Department of Public Safety. Since 1978, there have been several changes to how the National Guard functions within Colton City Limits including adding substations providing support for other departments such as firefighting or police; expanding resource allocation; authorizing more local volunteerISM units; conducting training programs both nationally and locally;and creating an event planning subcommittee which helps plan local events such as parades or holiday celebrations

The National Guard has been in Colton, California since the early 1800s. The first unit to arrive in 1853 was Company B of the Seventh Infantry Regiment. The company was stationed at Fort Tejon until 1861 when it moved to Camp Kearny. In 1871, the regiment became the Ninth Infantry and remained here until 1912 when it was redesignated as the National Guard Bureau's Seventeenth Infantry Regiment. In 1915, a battalion of the Seventeenth Regiment was sent to Texas to help fight in World War I. After returning home, the regiment became part ofthe United States Army Reserve and served here until 1951 when it reverted back to its original name: The National Guard Bureau's Seventeenth Infantry Regiment (California). Afterstateside retirement in 1960, elements of this unit were called up for service in Vietnam and remain garrisoned here today.
Colton, California is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 13,890 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south side of Interstate 5 and has a desert climate. The first European to visit Colton was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. At that time, Colton consisted of only about 50 people. In 1881, when the Uinta Mountains were split by the Santa Clara River, Colton became part of what would become Kern County. In 1915, Captain John Fergusson discovered oil shale near present-day Colton and offered land for settlement. The town was founded on November 8th, 1915 by Captains John Ladd and Harry Guggenheim with support from J.P. Morgan and other capitalists interested in developing this new resource based on coal drilling methods then unknown in America. By 1920 there were over 1,000 residents living in Colton proper while an additional 600 lived offsite in surrounding towns such as Yucca Valley and Bakersfield. One of the most important early figures associated with Colton was banker Averill Harriman who donated land to be developed into an agricultural center around 1916 which later became known as Harriman City Limits (now considered part of downtown). Other early settlers included Wernher von Braun who helped found Kern County’s Department of Motor Vehicles; Drury Elliott who built one of the first water reservoirs west of the Rockies; Herb Kappeler who ran a sawmill; Roy Wilshire who operated a store; Charles Norris who opened a hotel; and Rudolph Wehner who served as postmaster from 1922 until his death in 1941 Many businesses that have been still operating today such as Jiffy Lube are products or services started or continue by local residents like Roy Wilshire or Herb Kappeler

The town of Colton, California was founded in 1853 by James and Anna Colton. The town was named after Anna's maternal grandfather, Caleb Colton. In 1868, the town became part of the new city of Redding.
