When Colton, California, first started to become a popular tourist spot in the early 1900s, its citizens were happy to see a law enforcement presence. The Colton area was first settled in 1848 when the United States land office sent a team of men to purchase Rancho San Bernardino from Juan Bautista Colton. The ranch was located on what is now the eastern edge of today's Colton, California. The original grantees were John Sutter and his brother, Joseph Sutter. In 1857, the US Army built Fort Tejon on the former Rancho San Bernardino site and began guarding trade routes between California and Oregon. In 1864, following the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all American citizens in Mexico to leave or be arrested. Many people chose to flee into America rather than suffer through Mexican Rule. Among these Americans were John Sutter and his brother Joseph Sutter who left their home in Colton for unknown reasons in 1865. They arrived at Whatcom County Court House on April 16th 1865 where they filed a claim for Rancho San Bernardino with Captain James Haddock as trustee because no one else had claimed it yet. On October 10th 1865, Colonel William Moulton discovered that Joseph Sutter had died in Oregon while trying to get back home before he could be taken into custody by Mexican Authorities. Colonel Moulton named his son LtColston MoulTON (1868-1934) after his father's friend and mentor Major General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who personally sponsored LtColston's admission into West Point during World War I (see A History of West Point). Between 1848-1865 over sixty families moved onto Rancho San Bernardino which included twenty eight children of John Sutter and JosephSutter descendants living there between 1865-1900 inclusive; nine daughters married into other families while eleven sons married women from other ranches or towns near their homes including Mary Place (Boyd), Helen Place (Fowler), Marion Place (Davis), Everett Place (Gentry), Clifford Place (Lambert), Lewis Place (Moultrie) etc... This period also saw many industrial ventures take place here such as cattle shearing, flour milling & tannery production which continue up until present day... Today there are still descendants living on this property including Wendy & Donny Cook who ranched there from 1978 thru 1994
Founded in 1853, Colton was a small community located about 12 miles north of Needles on the San Bernardino Valley. The town was named for Captain John Colton who had surveyed and surveyed the area in 1841. The first post office was established in 1853, and the first store opened in 1855. In 1863, the town became a part of Riverside County.
