The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the City of Commerce, California in 1961. The gift was a C-47 Globemaster III helicopter. This helicopter served as the military's primary transport for cargo and passengers during the Cold War. The Globemaster III was used by both the USAF and United States Navy. It is also known as "the Boeing E-4B", "the Lockheed L-1049" or simply "the H-1". The Globemaster III helicopter was first delivered to the USAF on December 12, 1960. It entered service with the USAF on May 1, 1961. On July 20, 1962, it became operational with the USN when it was commissioned into service as USS Newport (AGS-5) Helicopter Squadron 5th Fleet at Pearl HarborHawaii. The USS Newport (AGS-5) Helicopter Squadron Historic Flight Museum located at Kaneohe Bay Honolulu contains an exhibit about this helicopter squadron's history and operation from 1959 to 1962. On October 3, 1966, while flying over Los Angeles International Airport from NAS Point Mugu in Marin County California when its engine caught fire due to a faulty cowl air filter; Santa Barbara Municipal Airport received its first Gift of Life Helicopter donation since World War II when Captain Harry Waddell donated his Douglas DC2H Skytrain aircraft flown by Naval Aviator Archie Kappler which had been out of use for many years due to bad maintenance records; SANTA BARBARA AIRPORT VOLUNTEER HELICOPTER MUSEUM

Commerce, California was a small town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California until it became an aerospace manufacturer and research center during the post-World War II era. The town is located on the eastern edge of what is now Los Angeles County, about 60 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The first permanent settler in Commerce was Nicholas Rojas in 1846. He came from Santa Clara Valley. There were two other early settlers, Wm. Hennessey and John Copley, who each claimed one side of a mesa above what is now Rojas Creek Road. A day's march from present-day Commerce, they discovered gold nuggets at Silliman National Monument on January 13, 1848. In 1850 George Hearn erected a shack atop an apple orchard near Silliman for his wife Mrs. Hearn to store provisions for their journey eastward overland to try to find more mines in this new country. A few weeks later Major General James Kossuth led American forces against Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto which ended the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). On November 3, 1850 Commodore Perry arrived at Monterey Harbor with his squadron of warships andconducted Operation Neptune's Spear against Essequibo Islands which resulted in American control over much of South America for almost 10 years after that event known as "the Trans-Pacific War". Commodore Perry then sailed back up the Pacific Coast and arrived at Monterey on October 15th 1851 after spending five months circumnavigating America from Hawaii to Northern Mexico City aboard USS Constitution under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter having become First Lieutenant Ulysses S. Grant's Vice Admiral responsible for operations along both coasts including Insular Warfare during this time period when navies such as those under Porter played an important role ashore across many nations in seeking dominance over maritime interests superior on land
