The United States Army was founded in 1776 as a result of the American Revolution. The first United States Army unit to be organized was the 1st Battalion, California Infantry. The 1st Battalion, California Infantry served in the Continental Congress during the American Revolution and then fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1802, after being disbanded, the battalion was re-organized as part of artillery units within the army. In 1805, following Mexican War service, the battalion became a regiment and participated in engagements at Chapultepec and Buena Vista. In 1812, following efforts by General John C. Fremont to form an independent national guard force for California, two battalions of infantry were raised from among soldiers who had enlisted with Fremont as part of his forces. These battalions served together until 1827 when they were disbanded again because their resources could not be fully utilized by Fremont’s new force. In 1830-31 an organization known as “Fremont’s Regiment” was formed and served under Lieutenant Colonel James McDowell during Indian Wars on various reservations throughout California including Stockton and Sacramento County where McDowell later became governor. After serving for several years McDowell returned to Virginia where he died in 1799 leaving command of his regiment to his son Archibald McDowell who also assumed command duringears next term (1830-32). Finally after multiple promotions LtCol John Chivington took command with headquarters at Stockton (1836-39). During this time both Chivington and Captain George Armstrong ledrd Union cavalry operations against Mexican insurgents along San Joaquin Valley Campaigns (1837) & Bear River Expedition (1838). Aftermath of war Gen William Hodge ordered all remaining troops on June 30th 1840 to march into Los Angeles County taking up arms against Californios fledgling Republic instead operating outposts near present day Redondo Beach & La Jolla

The United StatesArmy Garrison of Commerce, California was established in 1871 and garrisoned at the old Stockton Fort. The first soldier to arrive was Captain George C. Perkins. The fort was renamed Fort Newman in 1872, after General Antonio Luna y Costilla who served as Commander of Mexican Expedition against the Californios in 1847-48. In 1880, the fort became a post garrison with 9 enlisted men and 3 officers. It had a store and barracks for Soldiers, civilians, Indian Scouts or Apaches were quartered on the post from 1886-1890 . In 1903 it became an Infantry Post with 4 officers and 36 enlisted men. From 1917 to 1919 it became an Air Force Base attached to the Army Air Corps flying training missions over San Diego County for pilots of bomber planes during World War I. After World War I it returned to civilian hands until being sold by the US government in 1938 to private developers who used it as a farmstead until becoming defunct in 1968 when troops pulled out of California soil again
