When coffee was first discovered in the late 1800s, it was mostly grown in Java and India. However, because of the high demand for coffee, American farmers soon began to grow coffee. In 1892, a small company by the name of Peet's started selling ground coffee. As time passed, more and more people started to get interested in coffee and started importing its beans from various parts of the world. In 1915, America's first espresso machine was created by Angelo Appelletti. By 1980, Starbucks had opened its doors in Seattle – one of the earliest café chains in North America. The popularity of caffeine-based drinks has led to many companies beginning to invest in coffee production and sales – some even going so far as to open their own cafes specifically for this purpose. In recent decades, there have been numerous technological advances that have helped improve quality and purity of coffee beans. One such advancement is cold brewing which allows for a steadier extraction of flavor than traditional roasting methods. There is also no difference when it comes to the amount of caffeine that each type of bean contains; both types contain about 20 milligrams per cup (mg). Coffee beans were rationed under wartime conditions and were used for soldiers' morning caffeine fix. After the war ended, coffee production slowed down as people returned to their normal lifestyles. However, Japan began producing high quality espresso machines in the 1970s which led to an increase in Japanese-produced coffee exports during this time period. In 1994, Starbucks opened its first location outside of North America – located at Shinjuku Station within Tokyo – which helped revived interest in American roasting operations worldwide once again. Today, there are numerous companies that produce high quality coffees that can be found all over the world. Some notable brands include Colombian Roasters Ltd., Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Co., Arabica beans from Guatemala and Brazil plantations from Colombia), Kenyanroasters Ltd., Papua New Guinea's Milka Doje Beans Ltd., Indonesian Roka Kombucha Co., Ethiopia's Bebbanjo Gacaro Trading Company Ltd., Australian Nescafe Limited etc.).

Commerce, California was founded on December 24, 1853 by George W. Pitzer and James H. MacDonald. It was named in honor of the first post office in the territory, established at Tulare on November 12 of that year. The original town had a population of only 25 people and it served as the terminus for stagecoach travel between San Francisco and Sacramento. In 1858, Commerce became an independent city when it amalgamated with nearby Benicia. The city experienced a period of growth beginning in the late 1800s and continuing into the 1920s when its population reached 100,000 residents. Commerce experienced significant social and economic development during this time including becoming one of the most prosperous communities in Northern California. The city’s vibrant commercial district remains an important part of today’s community, providing access to a variety of cultural attractions and businesses which continue to support local economies.
